IN THE NEWS NOW:
DICK VAN DYKE CELEBRITY TOAST
August 26, 2006
WHAT A DAY! WHAT A DAIS!
The Universal Hilton, CA
It was loaded. From Elayne Boosler and Steve Lawrence, to Tim Conway and the CLASSY Mitzi Gaynor. There were Dick Martin, the TALENTED JoAnne Worley and even Fred Willard, plus the master of ceremonies, the still-handsome Monty Hall.
What comic timing this year's dais had, and what a treat to see it all on display at the 2006 Celebrity Toast of the GREAT Dick Van Dyke.
Conway and Mike Connors ranted and raved about Van Dyke, proclaiming him the funniest man ever. But upon second thought, the impromptu comic duo realized there was a whole lot of other funnymen who would need to be mentioned in such a statement, starting with Charlie Chaplin, all the way up to Jackie Gleason. Finally, after coming up with a dozen or two other greats, the two declared that Van Dyke, well, wasn't really funny at all.
But he is. And they were. And the whole day was an amazing parade of bits,
song-and-dance retrospectives, and all-around good stories from Hollywood that are too few and far between these days.
Carl Reiner stole the show--though he wasn't even there--with his taped tribute that poked fun at Van Dyke's nice guy persona. Reiner took personal credit for this special day, saying that Dick used to be "mean to dogs." Reiner and staff allegedly turned around this attitude of Van Dyke's years back, after telling him to be nicer to his canine co-stars. And look at him now. Honored by none other that ACTORS AND OTHERS FOR ANIMALS.
The star power behind this event shines bright. With organizers like the aforementioned Fred Williad's wife Mary, and last year's honoree the legendary
We style-watchers loved rubbing elbows with the stars and hearing about their committment to animals. Oh yeah, we also heard many jokes about making sure to spay or neuter your actors or any other animal you may have. Very cute.
We also loved he hugo-mongo array of silent auction items that caused us to dig deep into our carefully-matched handbags. Thank you CHERYL HINES for digging up a neato-CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM glass and a CURB photo signed by both her and LARRY DAVID. I won, I won, I won...and I want more. Call me, Cheryl.
The huge gift baskets featuring more luxury pet products than you can shake a bone at also delighted our visual palette, as did the loads of classic Hollywood memorabilia and movies (Dean Martin Roasts, Doris Day Gift Packages, and Loretta Swit's latest product line). We shop-and-bid-o-holics had our tails wagging in anticipation for next year. Just think, and entire year to save and budget for these fun Hollywood items. All for the animals' sake, of course. Ahem.
A BIG THANKS to all the ACTORS and OTHERS who put all this together to help
our furry and feathered friends. JoAnne Worley, thank you for keeping us LAUGHin with your beautiful toast and song (what a voice!) honoring Van Dyke, and for hanging out in the lobby and greeting everyone. A true hostess. Thanks also to AOA President Earl Holliman, Executive Director Susan Taylor, Board Member Mary Willard, and the rest of the people behind this great organization.
